Grading

September 18th, 2007

This grading system is based on the belief that every student can reach excellence!  Each student, given the proper instruction and support, can succeed in my classroom, especially if they participate in class and do the assigned work.  For those who need additional help, I am available before school on Wednesdays beginning at 8 am. or during 1st lunch.  50% of each student’s grade will be based on test scores, 40% will be based on quiz and skill mastery and 10% from homework, problems solvers, and participation.

GENERAL SCORING RUBRIC:

4 points: “Expert” ~ Student demonstrates complete understanding with no errors.  Communicates understanding by responding to all important elements of the question, includes appropriate strategy.

3 points: “Apprentice” ~ Student demonstrates complete understanding, but explanation may be lacking; may include minor error(s) of execution, but not of understanding.

2 points:  “Practitioner” ~ Contains complete response, but explanation is unclear; indicates a minimal understanding of procedure; may include one or more fundamental errors.

1 point   “Novice” ~ An attempt was made, but obvious gaps in understanding.  Omits parts of question and response; has major errors; uses inappropriate strategies.

0 points  “Uh-Oh” ~ No response; frivolous or irrelevant response.

**Because of the 4-point scale, percentages and letter grades are adjusted as follows to more accurately reflect student performance:

A = 3.5 AVERAGE OR BETTER (88%-100%)

B = 3.0 to 3.4 (75%-87%)

C = 2.5 to 2.9 (63%-74%)

D = 2.0 to 2.4 (50%-62%)

F = BELOW 2.0 (0%-49%)
